“Out of the eater, something to eat;
out of the strong, something sweet.”
Sometimes I think about 90% of our biblical knowledge actually comes from cheesy Hollywood movies built around the theme of the evil temptress seducing a poor man who is totally helpless, completely unprepared for such deceit, such disloyalty. He of course is an innocent, a babe in the woods, easy pickings.
In Samson’s case, there’s the small matter of disrespect for his parents, completely ignoring their wisdom, demanding they “fetch her…” when he fancies a wife they aren’t too sure about.
Poor, gentle Samson, he has no issues at all, the man is good, pure as the driven snow. Just step over his huge ego, his endless pride, the fact that he had some bad-feelz and slaughtered a thousand Philistines. The Philistines were bad guys anyway, so do not worry about it. Besides, there was that little thing with his wife and father in law being burned alive.
He’s a bit lustful too, leaving his wife to sob for a week before her untimely end, visiting prostitutes, meeting Delilah, and of course, he thinks nothing of lying to any of them. It’s all good, I mean they’re just prostitutes, right? Besides, his lies were just a matter of self-preservation.
I actually have great skillz when it comes to spinning, weaving the most elaborate defenses for other people’s behavior. Samson can hardly be blamed for lying, I mean the moment he told the truth they went and poked his eyes out. Murdering Philistines can hardly be called “wrong.” His wife was given to one of his companions and some people just need a really good donkey jawbone upside the head anyway. Crime of passion. It is what it is.
We can spin for Samson until the cows come home…….or until somebody finds honeycomb hidden in a lion carcass.
We can just heap all the blame on Delilah’s head, on her secret charms, her deceptive ways, and her great love of silver. No one in their right mind would ever empathize with a real survivor, a woman just trying to make her way in a world dominated by nothing but Philistines and weak kneed men who worship their own hair.
But than again, I’ve never claimed to be in my right mind.

Samson was right to reverence the power in his long hair….it was a symbol of his vow to God. When he let them cut that, that was the last straw for God. But even after, when his hair grew back, God honored it.
Everything else is right on, right on!

Or, he honored what Samson’s hair symbolized. If we followed this line of thought, we might end up seeing that God honored his own name. Interesting game I’m thinking about.

Didn’t you know, IB, that the alphas will inherit the earth? LOL. After all, we females are only after power, strength, athleticism, money and oh yes, looks.

I know, right? We’re just here to steal all their stuff in our relentless march towards world domination.

But, IB, they are right, a virtuous woman should be after those qualities in a man 😉
POWER: And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high. Luke 24:49
STRENGTH: for the LORD JEHOVAH is my strength and my song; he also is become my salvation. Isaiah 12:2
ATHLETICISM: For by thee I have run through a troop; and by my God have I leaped over a wall. Psalm 18:29
LOOKS; For the LORD taketh pleasure in his people: he will beautify the meek with salvation. Psallm 149:4
MONEY: But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:19
Are you on Twitter? I would love to drop you a comment from time to time. It makes me laugh that these red pill “Christians” think anything they have is of themselves. All their PSALM could be taken away from them if God willed it. Some men trust in chariots, some in princes.

Interesting perspective! God gets His way no matter how much we mess up! I loved it when his strength returned when his hair grew back. What a lesson Samson learned-the hard way!

I’m sorry. I missed something here… Again, what was the point of your post?

The point was that though Samson messed up, Delilah got the blame for everything. He was given great potential of God, and he forsook his vows, played around with fire, yet his wife and Delilah were entirely to blame rather than his own sinful nature. We can’t go around blaming others, even those that lead us astray for what is essentially OUR sin nature.

Yes,exactly. It astounds me sometimes how some people try to hold Samson up as a paragon of virtue. Perhaps it’s because he’s strong and we admire strength? Regardless, the whole book is about the falling away of the Israelites and about how, “In those days there was no king in Israel. Everyone did what was right in his own eyes.”
God works all things for good according to His purpose, but Samson is actually just busy womanizing, forsaking God, and killing Philistines. We do tend to heap all the blame on his wife and on Delilah, as if Samson is just a hapless victim, perhaps even a precursor to Christ Himself, which is an analogy that just seems crazy to me.

What we do have to bear in mind though, is that God did use Samson despite his straying. He is named as one of the examples of faith in Hebrews 11. A lot of the trouble he got into was God using him as a weapon against the Philistines and in his death he killed more Philistines than he did when he was alive. I’ve never heard that one about Samson and Jesus. LOL.
