Do you need a good tear jerker today? I sure do, especially this year, not sure why exactly, perhaps a reminder that there is still good in the world, a light at the end of the tunnel, that love really does conquer all?
So here are a few sweet Christmas stories I’ve rounded up, “The Day Christmas Died” from “Straight From the Heart.” Love that reminder of God as healer, as restorer, and the wisdom He gives us. “But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.” John 14:26
“A Christmas Gift” was charming from Seeking Divine Perspective, actually a reblog from “My Life In Our Father’s World.” I love the power of story and of sharing, and of sharing stories! I was actually a shoeless waif once and a kind woman didn’t bring me shoes or firewood, or anything practical, she simply made me a beautiful purple dress. I’ve never forgotten it and in many ways it has shaped my whole life. Sometimes you don’t need what is practical, you need what is magical.
Lastly, we have this little video, a well written poem from a former highway patrolman. I Just loved it. Merry Christmas, everyone.

One of the strangest words I know is the word “glurge”. Why would someone invent a word like that?
Of course, these stories fit the definition of glurge, but I don’t think some people easily understand the meaning of truth, mercy and grace.
Truth, mercy and grace once characterized our country more than most. With the erosion of Christianity, the suppression of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, we are losing an important understanding. Unless we know how much God loves us, we do not find it as easy — impossible, perhaps — to love each other. That is one reason the Christmas story is important. It helps us to understand just how much God loves us.

LOL! “Glurge,” what a great word! I love how the slang dictionary puts it, “syrupy tales of puppies, kittens, and Jesus.” Laughing here, because we are told in the Bible to “cling to what is good.” I once had some dark days and literally all I could do was go for a walk and mutter, “puppies, kittens, Jesus,” trying desperately to focus on, “whatever is lovely.” We can get so dark and so jaded, so cynical and wounded that the very idea of “truth, mercy, and grace” just makes us glurge. It’s hard work to fight the glurge and to soften your heart so you don’t just become one of those bitter old people yelling, “get off my lawn! ” 🙂

Love what you said about the purple dress. It’s nice to give people something they wouldn’t buy for themselves. I was considering what to give to a family who had suffered great loss in a fire. I ended up giving the mother bubble bath, perfume, and other women’s “luxuries,” because a friend who had been through a fire said one of the depressing things for her had been that everything smelled like smoke for weeks afterwards, and she never really felt clean.

Oh, amen to the bubble bath! Smoke can be a terrible thing and it just lingers long after it is gone. A friend of mine used to say that smells are so entwined with our memory, that the only way to untangle them from an unpleasant experience is to replace them with a better smell. 🙂

What a great video! It breaks my heart that law enforcers are being so maligned when the vast majority of them are such good people. Thanks for sharing such a beautiful poem.

Wow I clicked on that video and didn’t think it would rain on my face! Made me think of some dark moments in Iraq how in the midst of death and horrific violence, sometimes humanity breaks through it all when there’s kids in the picture…
