“Wizards of the Coast, the company behind D&D, vowed to revise the idea of inherently evil “races” such as orcs in its popular fantasy game”–link here
So I’m going to just stomp my feet here and insist that orcs are inherently evil. Orcs are bad. There is no such thing as a cute and cuddly orc. In fact, let’s take it a step farther, orcs aren’t even human. Worse yet, they aren’t even real.
Also bad, vampires. Yep, any undead blood sucking demonic thing is going to be evil. We do not need to accommodate the feelings of zombie predators whose sole purpose is to either smash you over the head with a giant axe or drain the blood from your body. Either way, we don’t have to be fair, we don’t have to be nice, and we don’t have to try to think of all the hapless orc babies who can’t help but be born the way they are.
If you wish to write a story called, “The Very Friendly Orc,” you are free to go for it. Attempting to force everyone else into perceiving Orcs as good not matter how they behave, is actually evil in it’s own right.
Believe it or not what I am saying here is actually controversial. It’s not politically correct. In fact, vampires are now in the Twilight Zone enjoying the moral ambiguity of 50 Shades of Grey. And Orcs are vowing to revise the negative perception people might have of them.
No word yet on whether or not the orcs are going to actually change their behavior, maybe stop roasting people alive and trampling on small villages. I am just crazy enough to think that their behavior is part of the reason why they have the public relations problem they do. I’m sure that now makes me an orc-a-phobe or something.
So you know what this kind of stuff does? It makes you crazy. I am insanitybytes for a reason, mostly because living in the 9th circuit of hell really bytes and it will make you crazy.

At least orcs don’t masquerade as politicians … Oh wait, many do! It once was acceptable wisdom to ‘call a spade a spade’. In today’s political correctness, it may soon be inappropriate to call an orc an orc.

I recently watched this kid at the beach pick up a stick and use it as a toy gun. So his mom got mad, lectured him about the evils of stick guns. He tried to say, “but it’s only for the bad guys,” so then she told him, “there’s no such thing as bad guys. Everyone is our friend!” Laughing here, but then I was suddenly traumatized, trapped in this kid’s world, imagining him encountering an orc. Good grief, not only are you forbidden to try to defend yourself, you can’t even acknowledge the evil thing is evil!
Then I came home and read this article from the HuffnPuff. Ai yi yi.

We get a bit confused. There is a difference between how we want the world to be and the world as it is, but we often let our fantasies override our good sense.
I use to read a great deal of fantasy. The only way to describe such literature is escapist. We read it to escape the harsh troubles of the real world. In a way that sounds absurd. We escape the real world by entering a world filled with monsters? Yes. That’s because the heroes win and achieve great victories. In the real world, we can achieve great victories, but they are usually hidden and subtle. When the Lord wins another soul, only a few may see. There are no grand parades. Not here in this life.
Anyway, are all orcs evil? That depends upon who is telling the story. Some people tell better stories. J. R. R. Tolkien told the story best, and his orcs were evil.

Ha! Exactly. He offered us his expert opinion on orcs so that should settle the matter.

On the surface the sounds like just another dumb PC move to laugh about, but it really points to a serious matter. Our society has been trending downwards with moral relativism for several years now, where there is no evil, just another person’s “truth”. If we can’t distinguish between good and evil than all that’s left is anarchy.

Yes, precisely! All this moral relativism takes away our ability to discern good and evil.

I think that’s what bothered me about the musical “Wicked”–that effort to take an imaginary character, tell the story from her point of view, and try to show that she wasn’t evil at all, even though the original story mean her as a portrayal of evil in the clearest manner possible. Real life has ambiguities. We sometimes fail to discern the voice of God from all the temptations that surround us. Sometimes we realize we’ve been fighting on the wrong side. It helps to have fiction where good and evil are clearly defined so we can cheer for the good and turn thumbs down on the evil. That practice might even strengthen us for life in the real world. J.

Amen, Salvageable. There is nuance in the real world, shades of grey, and the bad guys are not always the evil we perceive them as. That said, it is good in both fiction and the real world to have some clear definitions of right and wrong. All this moral relativism and moral ambiguity does not create harmony and peace, it builds resentments and divisions.

I also want justice for trolls. They were among the scariest of all mythical beings and now everyone just uses for someone mocking others on the internet. Does anyone even remember the old trolls? The old, evil trolls?
