Anybody ever heard that saying, “I’m just preaching to the choir,” as if what you are doing serves no real purpose, they’ve already heard it, or it’s just a waste of time??
Preach to the choir, peeps! Seriously! The gospel never gets old. Our faith is new each morning and the Bible tells us the word is revealed to us, “precept by precept, a little here, a little there….”
The very “worst” that can happen when you “preach to the choir” is that someone will feel affirmed, validated, and encouraged in something they already know. That’s a pretty awesome “worst.”
“The choir” is also frequently neglected and ignored. It’s human nature to want to rescue the lost, put out fires, save the day. Also triage, right?? We need to attend to the needs of those who are bleeding out and their hair is on fire.
(True story, I once sat in the ER with a sick kid waiting to be seen for hours. It was almost our turn when someone arrived intoxicated, bleeding profusely, and then promptly set their hair on fire with a lighter. Triage, we got bumped yet again.)
Many times, the ones who hold it all together, the stoics, the rescuers, the caretakers, the ones who so often sit in the choir, really need your words the most of all. So, preach to the choir, and let silly sayings fall to the wayside.

Churches actually exist to preach to the “choir”. Pastors shepherd the sheep and teach the sheep how to bring the lost to the church. Pastors fail when they fail to preach to the “choir”. Unless church members work together to build each other up, few will be ready to answer the questions of the lost as they should.

Amen, Tom! I love how Jesus tells Peter to, “feed my sheep.” Feed is kind of like fuel, nourishment. It’s equipping the saints with a good breakfast so they can go to work. 🙂

I love this. Every one who enters a church is in need of spiritual healing. Even the choir and more often those who sit in judgment.

Amen. Pastors are to prepare the “saints” in the congregation to face the day to day activities in the world that are faced, and to proclaim Christ, Salvation, Eternity, to the lost and hurting. Pastors cannot reach, know, and speak to everyone.
And every now and then, a choir member will meet Christ during a Service also.

I love this concept. In my experience, the “choir” can be the hardest-working, most sincere people in church, and they should not be taken for granted. They need to be spiritually and emotionally fed.

I’m more convinced than ever that American Christianity is cranking out massive amounts of burned out Christians because the “preaching” offered is law without gospel. Do more! Be more! And Christians rarely get encouraged by what Christ did for us on the cross.
Definitely see a need to minister, encourage, and spur each other on as brothers and sisters in Christ.

That’s a really good point, “do more, be more,” busy, busy, busy. We have a really cool pastor and he’s been speaking about rest, about how, “He MAKES me lie down in green pastures.” Mary who rests at the feet of Jesus has chosen the better thing. Ha! It’s not that we’re all laying around, it’s that we spend time with the Lord and actually listen to Him. I think it’s the Western world with all our distractions, busyness, and “quests for success” that has kind of detracted from how important that is.

Oh, IB, this reminded me, I once heard a church staff person refer to me as a low-maintenance member. I was pleased on one hand, but on the other …. who wants to be taken for granted. Well, yes, I guess I do. If Jesus were to say that about me, I would be pleased because then he could just pour on the blessings and not have to major in getting me out of pickles. 😀

LOL! Well, the Lord has certainly had to get me out of more than a few pickles, but I think I’m much like you, low maintenance around people. I’ve heard that saying before, “preaching to the choir” and thought, what are we, chopped liver? Ha! We are definitely not. We deserve a good word now and then. 🙂

Great message. We go to church sometimes to mend our souls, in a similar way we sometimes go to hospitals to mend our bodies.
Sometimes words, or songs from a good choir may help lift our hearts, minds, and spirits in a similar way as a good doctor or nurse helps mend our bodies.
That is if only we listen, hear, and follow a good shepherd, or a good doctors advice..

Amen, IB. I had been preaching on our identity in Christ as sons and daughters steadily for about two years when one of my congregants came up to me and said, “I think I’m finally starting to get it….” We definitely learn by spaced repetition and, more importantly, we meet together in order to encourage and build one another up in the faith.
Yup, pretty much means, preaching to the choir. 🙂

Amen, Mel! That’s it exactly. And sometimes people just need encouragement, permission to follow what they know in their heart is true and right. The world has a way lining up and coming against us, when we are actually on the right path.
