So John Branyan and I don’t always see eye to eye, but when he’s good, he’s good and this was good.  “The Great God of Style.”  Click to read it. It’s good.

By the way, Jesus Himself said, “why do you call me good? There is none good but your Father…” nevermind, those words just always pop into my head when I use the word “good.”

So I am all about styling. Style is what it’s all about. Ask my kids. They can be like, “I’m broke, I crashed my car, I’m terribly depressed” and I’m like, yeah, but you sure are looking good, aren’t you?? Look at that hair, look at how your shoes match your handbag. Styling. I don’t care if we’re on a forced death march in a post apocalyptic nightmare and we haven’t eaten for 3 days. We’re still going to be looking good, aren’t we?

I’m not going to repent, either. I am all about keeping your crown straight and your handbag near, like the Queen of England. I just mention it because I really understand the comfort of tradition, the idol that we can build to our own personal style, our own preferences.

Branyan is focused very much on “truth,” which then begs the very Biblical question what is truth?? By the way, the one who asked that question followed it up with, “I find no fault in this man.” I think that’s important because many Christian people seem to feel as if the very question, “what is truth” is somehow sinful, Pontius Pilate. What is wrong with you? Are you working for the other side?

This can create a dreadful problem, a major conflict, because Christians are called to follow the way and the truth and the life, to diligently pursue truth, and then we often get a bunch of flack if we don’t just accept the truth as it is passively spoon fed to us.

There is a liberal concept that is sure to rattle some conservative hearts but just the same it is a sound idea, a valuable tool called, “making space.” We need to learn how to make space for one another’s pursuit of the truth. Make space for one another’s preferred style. Learn to discern the difference between truth and style.

Truth matters. Style is really just fluff. Don’t forget to shake things up a wee bit, rearrange the deck chairs on the titanic, and set your handbag down.
