“This is the fix we are in. If the universe is not governed by an absolute goodness, then all our efforts are in the long run hopeless. But if it is, then we are making ourselves enemies to that goodness every day, and are not in the least likely to do any better tomorrow, and so our case is hopeless again. We cannot do without it, and we cannot do with it. God is the only comfort, He is also the supreme terror: the thing we most need and the thing we most want to hide from. He is our only possible ally, and we have made ourselves His enemies. Some people talk as if meeting the gaze of absolute goodness would be fun. They need to think again. They are still only playing with religion.” …...CS Lewis

Just love this quote from CS Lewis today. That really is concise and well stated, the very essence of the Truth we must confront.

As to only “playing with religion,” I think I was once there myself, just kind of “Meh, God is good but so far away.” I kind of had an impotent faith, lacking any real power or authority.

It was the darkness of the world that really started to get to me, to weigh me down. If people are good by nature then we should see more evidence of that manifesting itself all around. Instead I was just seeing greed, addiction, selfishness, poverty, destroyed lives, dead children. Somebody finally told me, “the enemy isn’t playing, but God isn’t playing  around either.”

I still really like that revelation, have a quote on my fridge today that says, “God isn’t messing around.”

I like this upside down woman. I used to stand in my kitchen just like that asking the Lord why everything is always so upside down. I’m not hanging from the ceiling anymore nor laying on the floor making snow angels……
