workThis little thing came through my facebook feed and I thought, wouldn’t we all? Wouldn’t it be fabulous to be totally self-made,to have no dependance on others, to never risk being vulnerable?

Or perhaps not, perhaps being vulnerable and influenced by others is the very definition of being human. Regardless, I totally like the idea of being strong, independant, impervious to others, never having to credit anyone else, in control of all outcomes, always. Existing by nothing but the fruit of my own labors.

But it isn’t true at all. That is not the nature of reality. In fact, the more I stared at this thing, the more I was struck by how downright selfish and self absorbed it is. I suspect this girl  had parents, so right there we have revealed the lie behind never having to say, “you wouldn’t have this if it wasn’t for me.” Then I assume there were teachers, doctors,  mentors, friends along the way. People who built the roads and bridges she drives on, people who built the car she drives in the first place? An employer? No one is an island.

Grace, shall we talk about grace? Clearly none of us would have salvation, redemption were it not for Christ’s sacrifice on our behalf. So, “you wouldn’t have this if it wasn’t for me,” totally applies there, too.

And marriage well, how would you even go about trying to love someone like this? There are treasures there, fruits within marriage that clearly say, “you wouldn’t have this if it wasn’t for me.” That doesn’t even begin to touch on the material, but rather the spiritual, the personal, memories. A whole life built together.

Just saying, don’t be this girl. She’s really sad. I’m getting depressed just thinking about her. Don’t be the guy equivilent of her either. Don’t be like me either, the girl who gets into heated arguments and great moral debates with…facebook memes. What can I say, it’s a tough job, but somebody has to do it.
