Once again I’d like to pause and thank the Google for promptly thinking of me when someone types the word “stupid” or “insane” in their search bar.
A search engine term that recently came through the Google was, “jesus you can’t fix stupid.” I suppose it may have been an epithet or a last-ditch cry of desperation, perhaps one that takes our Lord’s name in vain, so I’ve switched it out a bit and fixed the punctuation. Now we have, “Jesus, you can’t fix stupid?”
Oh, He can, He truly can! Fixing the stupid is His specialty. In fact, if it weren’t for Jesus Christ we’d have nothing but stupid, stumbling about the planet and muttering to itself. We ourselves can’t fix stupid, but Jesus Christ sure can. He does it everyday, transforming lives, bringing order to our chaos, redeeming even that which some may perceive as beyond all redemption.
Ron White, the comedian, first coined the term, “you can’t fix stupid” in his humorous routines where he drunkenly laments the foolishness of man. It’s a term that always makes me laugh because long ago when I was a teen-ager I wrestled with that very question in terms of faith, How could God be good? What kind of a God would drop me on my head and trap me on a planet full of stupid people? Is this some sort of penal colony?
So what am I expected to do here, simply endure the company of stupid people for the next 50 years, people I can not even communicate with? These people, I tell you, they are mean, compulsive, unintelligent, unteachable, prone to destruction, unable to learn from their mistakes, envious, abusive, vengeful….
You didn’t have to explain total depravity to me, I’d already seen ample evidence of it.
God patiently listened to all my complaints, ever so gently out reasoning me each time. Once He actually scared the heck out of me because I was explaining to Him how He couldn’t possibly exist and He suddenly said, Then Who do you think you’re yelling at? He had me there.
Everyone wrestles with doubt and frustration in life, not just stupid people. In fact, experience has taught me that “the stupid” affects intelligent people too, we just tend to do it a bit faster, more creatively, and with an artistic depth that releases the stupid on several different levels all at once. It’s more like simply dropping a larger boulder on your own toe rather than just a hefty rock. The result is pretty much the same, so it’s not the sort of thing one likes to brag about.
Take heart, my Google-friend. Jesus Christ really CAN fix stupid.

Haha…love it. I would love to see God’s list “You just might be stupid if…” I’m sure He has enough material, just from my life, to do an amazing stand-up comedy routine. Possibly some of the entertainment we’ll see in the next life….I hope… 🙂 Of course, then He’s show the movie of our glorious transformation, then everyone will cheer and love Him all the more.
Loved the comment about being dropped on our head into a penal colony, too. Cracked me up. Thanks!

Once again, I. B., you’ve brought a hint of humor to worldly truth….. God really can “fix stupid !!” He did me (smiling).
May the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob bless you and yours.
Yours in Christ;

I typically stay away from certain posts for the benefit of everyone everywhere all the time…
…but I am SOOOOOOOO Jealous!
I almost yelled “It’s not Fa*r!”, out loud, in front my dogs! Luckily I have a modicum of self control and will not have to spend the rest of the day washing my mouth out with soap.

You’ve inspired an as yet unpublished post about my Google search terms. For some reason, ‘zulu boobs’ is one of my top ones. At least your Jesus one makes sense on some level ….

SO funny! I have weekly proof Jesus fixes stupid when I do or think something incredibly dumb. Moments later, He provides the wise thing, and the only way I can respond, besides, “Thank you,” is, “DOH!” And a smack on my forehead.

Aah, I love this! I’ve certainly done this a number of times myself. This is why Jesus reminds us that His yoke is easy, the Gospel is simple, don’t complicate things. I find that the so-called “unintelligent” seem to get this right more often. 🙂

IB, in reference to your comment – “Is this some sort of penal colony?”… A strange irony exists that I find rather humorous. The Catholic doctrine of an after-life destination of necessary purging of unresolved sin called ‘Purgatory’ seems very consistent with our present human imprisonment on Earth. LOL.
Stupid? Well, I once was blind, but now I see; once deaf, but now able to hear; foolish indeed, but now wise through the guidance, anointing, and illumination of the perpetually abiding presence of the Spirit of God!

Ditto to all the other comments…..Sy Robertson once said, “You can’t fix trash. You can’t fix a neutered dog. And you just can’t fix stupid.” But Jesus can and does, I see the proof every morning I look in the mirror, matter of fact, hate to admit it, but He still is working on that Bubba I see in the mirror! Thanks again for making me smile, laugh, and think at the same time!

I first heard “you can’t fix stupid” from a friend named Bob. I’m glad to know who coined the phrase. (Although for all I know Bob might have said it first.) I’m glad God can and does fix stupid. But maybe the rest of us shouldn’t bother to try. J.

Think about the fact we take people seriously when they say this.
And yet we doubt God can fix stupid?

I concur with you post except I would not use the words intelligent or stupid. Instead I would use wise of foolish to emulate King Solomon’s observations of mankind.. If interested, read why

Thank you for that link, much appreciated. “Stupid” has taken on a mean tone hasn’t it? And intelligent seems to have come to mean “moral.” That’s a shame because there are plenty of intelligent people who aren’t wise at all.
I like the old fashioned definition of “stupid” because most of us are in a stupor, asleep, and not really unintelligent at all.

I say, based on what I read and hear in the news daily, I am inclined to concur. Sad.
However, By only using only these two words, we will convey the message to only judge a person’s choice of actions rather than label, demean, or insult them personally.
Even though, we sometimes apparently make choices as if we are in a stupor, asleep, or not really intelligent at all.
