Everything you read on the internet is absolutely true. For example, here is one of my favorite news stories. It is a man from 1922 out hunting giant grasshoppers. Grasshopper man.
Grasshopper hunting is a popular sport on the internet. Many people have engaged in it, as you can see here, the fruits of another particularly good hunting trip.
These are not my pictures nor are they my “news” stories, they are simply legendary internet examples of why is never a good idea to think for yourself. In fact, it is best to never question anything. Please, just turn on the TV or point and click, close your eyes, and allow your brain to absorb whatever it wants.
The grasshoppers, we often deep fry the legs in a beer batter, golden brown and crispy on the outside,tender and juicy on the inside. Grasshopper breasts are best cooked in a crock pot with a can of mushroom soup, 3 cloves of garlic, and some baby carrots.

Interesting that you would make fun of people who believe everything on the internet uncritically, yet can’t see that you do the same with the bible… please use the same critical thinking and investigation to take another look at the contents of that collection of 66 books. You might be very surprised at what you discover. I know I was, and am every day

I actually do think critically about the bible. Many times I have questioned God Himself, so I am probably not the right target for your concerns about a lack of critical thinking or investigation skills.

So… you have ‘critically examined and tbought’ about how, for example.. the prayer of Jesus in the garden could have been recorded accurately when all the disciples were sleeping and out of ear shot?

Yes, you are dodging it. You answered my first comment about critically examining the Bible saying yiu do. I presented an example, and asked you… not the bible, I asked you a question if you had critically examined the prayer of Jesus accuracy in light of the disciples being asleep and outside of earshot ability to hear the words.
You dodged in refusing to answer.

I am not dodging anything. The truth is simply that you believe you know more than God Himself, so what chance do any of my answers have? You would just shoot them down, gloat about your alleged vast intellectual superiority, and then go mock me to all your friends. Frankly, that game is just boring.

Easy. The same way YOU know that ‘in the beginning God created the heavens and the earth,’ while no man being present. But know it alls know that already; it’s just that darn stubborn and proud heart………
Just an observation mike, God’s word is good. Very good. You and me? Eh, that’s another story. But keep trying to fault believers for your disappointments in God and scripture. Not too smart.

Another interesting portion for your ‘critical examination’
“Then assembled together the chief priests, and the scribes, and the elders of the people, unto the palace of the high priest, who was called Caiaphas, And consulted that they might take Jesus by subtilty, and kill him. But they said, Not on the feast day, lest there be an uproar among the people.” -Matthew 26:3-5 KJV

Which one of the disciples or followers of jesus was at this meeting to have recorded the conversation or happenings?
This is how fiction reads. It defies critical examination as actual happenings that could have been recorded for inclusion in a Christian gospel, by and for Christians. Or is there a different answer open to critical examination and thinking?
Face the truth of the matter, “god did it” is your only option. At least the grasshopper hunters have doctored pictures. You only have faith, not critical thought and examination on your side.

I know you’re not talking to me KIA, but let me help you out here:
“He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee along with him, and he began to be sorrowful and troubled. Then he said to them, ‘My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.’
Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed” (from Matthew 26)
He took Peter, John and James with Him and then went a little further. You don’t know how much further so you don’t know they were out of earshot. It may have been only a few feet further.
“Couldn’t you men keep watch with me for one hour?” he asked Peter.
You don’t know the length of Jesus’s prayer or how long He remained quietly listening to His Father, but Jesus’s question to Peter indicates that He was praying for at least an hour. Therefore, my critical reading of the passage allows the possibility that Peter, James and John drifted in and out of sleep and heard the bits of Jesus’s prayer that Matthew and Mark recorded.
“While he was still speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, arrived. With him was a large crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests and the elders of the people.” [emphasis added]
It’s also possible that someone from the large crowd heard his prayer – we don’t know how far off they were at that point since they arrived while He was still speaking.
I drifted in and out while the hub and I watched a movie last night, but, even so, and even with the flu, I caught enough of it to tell you some of what happened.
Critical thinking analyzes possibilities with an open mind, it doesn’t merely criticize with a set agenda or foregone conclusion.

Critical thinking doesn’t only analyse possibilities, but weighs actual evidence and probabilities. Just making stuff up that might fit what you want to continue believing is not critical thinking. It’s the very definition of confirmation bias, only with no evidence whatever

I didn’t make anything up. I read the text critically and saw that the time frame (at least one hour) + personal experience (sleeping through most of a 90 minute movie and yet still catching some of it) + being motivated to try to stay awake (out of devotion to the one who asked them to) = the possibility, and even likelihood, that among the 3 men who were with Jesus, at least one of them heard parts of His prayer. It’s a brilliant weighing of the evidence.
Now you walk me through the weighing of evidence that lead to your conclusion that they were out of earshot and fully, one hundred percent asleep the entire time Jesus prayed.

Must you accuse others of ‘not thinking’ to justify your own inability to understand One greater than you?
You will run out of ‘questions’ before you will find any weakness in scripture. The so called shortcomings in the text are easily answerable to a soft heart. And btw, it’s called the word of God for a reason.

KIA, I’m just wondering if you have read the book “Evidence that Demands a Verdict” by Josh McDowell, or “The New Evidence”, in which there is a section in Part III addressing “radical Christian criticism” of the Bible?
Using critical thinking and investigation of things found on the internet, AND on what you find in the bible is a GOOD thing to be doing. I just find an awful lot more nonsense out there on the internet than I do in the bible. I have had many questions regarding the scriptures, but have researched accordingly and found answers.
I know this post by IB was just a bit of FUN. it makes me wonder why you are taking her to task so seriously…… ?

I would like to see grasshopper season opened here around, say, August, as that is when said grasshoppers decimate some of my bushes…kind of lie a locust plague sort of thing…happy hunting!

Ha! Locust pie! I hadn’t thought of that, but it sounds delicious. I once knew a woman who made the most amazing steak and kidney pie. I doubt she put locust in it, but it wouldn’t have mattered, it was that good.:)

I never understand why so many take so much time and effort to challenge something they think is such a waste of time…..???
Some spend an inordinate amount of time attacking/harassing the followers of the God they have no interest/belief in.
I’m not sure where KIA stands. The questions are good, and deserve an answer, or at least some thought. I appreciate them being brought up. I think there must have been at least one believer among the “chief priests, and the scribes, and the elders of the people” to report what happened there. What happened in the garden could have been reported by any of those with Him, as you can tell when you read what the bible says:

It doesn’t give the time between his interactions with people, or even the entire content of his prayer time (one hour). I believe they heard what they heard and reported what little they actually heard of it.
I do believe in critical thinking and participate in it regularly, but there is a dirfference between critical thinking and thinking which seeks only to criticize and bring down rather than to exhort and encourage.

Hi Ann and all,
I was told when I was a child that God chose certain people to write the Bible. He breathed the words into them. So, I have always believed that God told the writers of the Bible or the narrators what he wanted placed in the Bible. Maybe no one did hear Jesus’s prayer, either way, it was important for us to know about it. Knowing that God breathed life into the Bible and is the actual author of HIS word, should be all that matters, I would think. As others have said, we trust in God and have faith in his word and that he created the scriptures and for a purpose. Just my thoughts.

If you repeat a lie long often enough, it is destined to be believed as truth.
