Kind of entertaining, the Babylon Bee just did a spoof called “Report: Every Single Person At Church Doing ‘Fine’”
Cracked me up: “The survey was conducted as the pastor faithfully stood at the doors of the church after the Sunday service, shaking the hands of each churchgoer as they left and asking how they were doing. “It’s really quite spectacular,” the pastor told reporters Tuesday. “You would think, given the state of our fallen world, that at least one person would be going through a crisis or battling some kind of indwelling sin that they need help with. But not at this church—we’re all doing fine it seems. Praise the Lord!”
With perfect synchronicity one of my favorite pastors just spoke of that very thing last Sunday. We’re all “fine.” What is this “fine,” an acronym for something like, Fanatical, Insecure, Neurotic, and Emotional?
It gave me a laugh because when people ask me how I am, I am prone to tell them, which is often enough to make them start backing up slowly before just fleeing for the safety of the parking lot. People seldom ask you how you’re doing with any genuine desire to know. That can be a harsh truth to swallow but truth it is.
For the record I am never really “fine.” I am actually pressed on all sides, relentlessly pounded on, engaged in major spiritual warfare, and forced to deal with a myriad of things way too big for me. Heartbreak and helplessness really is a daily thing. You can call me the anti-prosperity gospel, too. Some people find Christ and suddenly their lives are perfect. I feel more as if the gates of hell just kind of opened up and tried to swallow me and it’s been that way for a long, long, time.
On the bright side there is an Ap for people like me, a bit of scripture really, 2 Corinthians 4:7-10 “But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us. We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair, Persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed; Always bearing about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our body.”

How are you today? I’m fine…………
When really, you want to say: (Do you live under a rock? The local news is pitiful. State news is pathetic. National news is an embarrassment. Global news is maddening. Kids drive me nuts, as they think they know everything at the age of 14. The boss is the perfect example of promoting someone who is utterly incompetent. I have every sickness imaginable. My wife died yesterday. My husband lost his legs last week. My nephew died in Iraq. I was falsely accused of extortion. Someone stole my computer. The dog peed on the new floor. The canary has laryngitis. The goldfish are floating. The washing machine broke down. The car was just towed to the shop; needs an engine. Just got laid off. Can’t mow the lawn, it’s all weeds. Garage burned down. Neighbor plowed into my fence. The outward man perishes………the inward man is renewed……..)
Other than that, I’m fine, tkx for asking. 😉
Fortunately ms bytes, we understand that people really do mean well when they ask how are ya, it’s just the rrrrrrrest of the story that’s interesting and how we deal with this thing called life.

Hmmm. Fanatical, Insecure, Neurotic, and Emotional. I really like that. I’ll remember it the next time I’m tempted to answer, “Fine.” 🙂

My famous response is “Good.”
Being the introverted soul that I am, I’m not about to say how I really feel unless I can tell that people actually WANT to know how I’m doing. 😉

How am I? Do you have a few hours? I guess I wonder if the pastor really wants to know how we’re doing. He’d never get done shaking hands if he did.

Around here, some people answer “how are you?” with “I’m blessed,” which I rather like. I do resort to “fine” a lot, or I try a clever line such as, “I’m not complaining,” or, “I think I’ll make it.” When I’m in the mood, I’ll toss them, “I’m doing just fine,” which is an ironic quote from a Gavin DeGraw song. I typically go with “I’m hangin’ in there.”
Which is the truth, and some people even apreciate it! ; – )
