Now why didn’t I think of this? It’s brilliant.
A woman has sued Microsoft and won 10,000 dollars for a non consensual upgrade. link here
It’s about time somebody tried to do something about aggressive tactics that take away all user choice and leave us powerless to defend ourselves. It’s especially annoying when the thing is going to crash your whole system and interfere with your other programs.
I am all about computer anarchy, as in we should always have the right to “never update” or “no thanks I’ll update manually.”

Yeah non-consensual lawsuits! Those @#$%’s are always slamming us and there is nothing we can do. I was using Windows 8 and it worked OK. Microsoft was continually trying to get me to switch to Windows 10 – which I had heard was worse then 8 – more bugs, big bugs. So I kept Xing every popup that tried to get me to switch and there were at least 3 or 4 perday. then one day I had to step away from my computer to answer the phone and when I returned it was switching me to Windows 10. It tied up my computer for 2 hours and it has a lot of bugs. I was so angry.

Aggravating, isn’t it? What ticks me off is when they try to trick us. So normally you would click “no” or X out of a pop up box, but if you do those things, it’s rigged to mean “install.” That’s just deceptive manipulation.

Oh PLEASE – I’m no IT tech; simple common sense applies here.
1) Go to “start” (windows icon) , in the “search programs and files” box, type “windows update”.
A list should appear, with one option reading “turn automatic updating on or off”.
2) Click that link; a pane will open, showing your options, the top category, “important updates” has several, among which is “download updates but let me choose whether to install them”. This is the option I chose. Note -Not accepting updates will cause system problems, and in some cases a crash. ( I Personally experienced this back in 2004)
ALSO, from experience, they download these in the early “AM” (I’m on PST, and noted this when wanting to shutdown my PC after an “all-nighter”. That is when I would go directly to Windows update; otherwise the updates would start, and they would then let the PC shut down..
When windows downloads updates, a small icon should appear in your taskbar; you can then be pro active, and go directly to windows update, and click “check for updates”; the list will show all of them, and you, the end user (ought to know) which programs you have that will need said updates, and which you do not need.
Windows 7, which is my OS, will only be supported for approximately another two and a half years. I’m not amused.
Ironically, I received an invitation for a free upgrade to Windows 10, but my nvidia graphics card won’t allow this, it fails their compatibility test. The free upgrade expires soon, but the icon for the upgrade is still in my taskbar.
Windows 10 is geared for mobile devices, and I do not own any. I don’t want to be belled like a cat. Bad enough that Microsoft allowed the NSA a backdoor to all windows OS to see a users e-mail.

So, let’s see where we are:
25 years ago, you couldn’t go on the internet.
20 years ago, you could go on the internet, but there wasn’t much there.
15 years ago, you could get music and videos from other people on the internet for “free”
10 years ago, your phone could go on the internet.
5 years ago, your phone became a computer.
Now, your computer is like your phone, almost useless without the internet.
For me, I was using Windows XP and dial up 5 years ago. I could turn off all updates and only got malware once or twice. With things like YouTube and iTunes, you can’t have music and video anymore, only rights to see and hear them unless the internet goes down or the content disappears.
Unlike 1984, you don’t even need someone to take back the books and rewrite them anymore. The internet memory hole does it for you.
