I used to grieve over bad journalism and then when it died completely, I mourned for years. I was fond of it as an art form, I admired things like journalistic integrity and old-fashioned notions of simply asking “who, what, where, and why?” I remember a time when people took journalism so seriously, reporters would go to jail before they’d reveal their sources. Those were the days! Now I’ll be left trying to tell my grandchildren about the good old days and they won’t even believe me.
So Donald Trump, I’m not even on the Trump bandwagon, but I am on the bandwagon for “let’s cackle hysterically over what passes for journalism these days,” especially anything Trumpian. Even with my low expectations for the media, er, Mediated Reality I mean, I found myself sputtering indignantly. There is bad journalism and then there are the times they just so completely leave the worldly realm, they simply must be orbiting their own little planets.
So the first article is from a few months back, US news and World Report, By CALVIN WOODWARD, Associated Press. We must give the man his byline. So, they are fact checking the GOP debate and we come to this which allegedly causes great offense,
TRUMP: “Islam treats women horribly.”
Sounds fairly straight forward to me. I don’t know what to say. There are simply appalling things being done to women in the name of Islam. Somewhere between not being able to drive and being stoned to death, interspersed with a few acid attacks, we arrive at “horribly.” But oh no, apparently this is false.
“THE FACTS: No such generalization is supported by the diverse circumstances for women in the Muslim world. The United States has yet to see a woman as president, many years after Muslim women achieved national leadership in other countries, most prominently Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto back in the late 1980s and in the 1990s.”
Oh well than, obviously Trump is lying! Islam is awesome to women. I mean Pakistan has clearly passed the US in their dedication to women’s rights by electing a female Prime Minister.
Wait, Benazir Bhutto, why does that name ring a bell? Oh yeah, she was assassinated in a suicide bombing in 2007! That’s kind of important, don’t you think? I mean if we’re going to use the election of Benazir Bhutto as evidence of women’s rights in Pakistan we should at least mention what happened to her shortly thereafter, shouldn’t we? Nope, not relevant. The rest of this piece is just pure fluff…all about the beauty of women’s rights in the ME, including women’s right to play sports…in full burkas..behind walls.
There just isn’t a face palm big enough for this nonsense.
Next I come to a recent article in the Huffington Post, and while it is probably sacrilege to even call the Huff ‘n Puff “news,” many people read it and it’s been shot through my Facebook feed and Google news as a legitimate form of Mediated Reality. So Huff n Puff declares, “Donald Trump: Americans Who Don’t Report Their Suspicious Neighbors Should Be ‘Brought To Justice’” Naturally this gets my attention, so I slog through some stuff that clearly tells us Trump is planning to jail us all, surely known as ” — a hallmark of some of the most brutal and deadly regimes in history, Nazi Germany and Russia under Stalin.”
Apparently Christina Wilkie,
, got a bit excited there and forgot the part about the velvet glove approach to propaganda and brainwashing. For goodness sake Christina, you don’t just whack people upside the head with a Nazi references, these things require subtlety, seduction. Donald Trump is a Nazi who’s going to send you to the gulag, should at least be preempted with a kiss, some pretty words, something! This is an unpleasant jolt to my system and also completely disconnected from the story at hand. You need to set the stage first, warm your audience up. Then you drive a stake through their heart.Christina however has gone completely over the edge and can no longer even contain herself. She’s not even trying now, she’s just decided to open it up and fire with both barrels and so she ends with,
“Editor’s note: Donald Trump regularly incites political violence and is a serial liar, rampant xenophobe, racist, misogynist and birther who has repeatedly pledged to ban all Muslims — 1.6 billion members of an entire religion — from entering the U.S.”
Ai yi yi. Unbiased journalistic integrity at it’s finest. If people keep this up, they’ll usher Trump right into office

There was some loon on disqus I talked to who asked “why did God let Bush happen?” to which I responded “why did God let Obama happen?” to which he responded “to keep our nation safe from the Republicans”.
Actually, I think the media is Trump’s biggest support right now. There is so much media against Trump and with many people nowadays putting mis-trust in the media (all but a few anarchist media sections that is), it seems they’ll want to actually explore what Trump is really for and then decide Trump is the most articulate of the candidates.

Indeed, there are few cool heads left in this campaign. “Journalism” has been going down hill for some time now, even as access for journalists becomes greater and greater (embedded in military operations; instantaneous voice, written, and video transmission worldwide; satellite coverage over every square inch of the planet; open borders to all countries; cheap mobile communication available to anyone wanting to act as a reporter; billions of cellphones that record video constantly of every occurrence, etc). It seems the more they know the more they feel the need to embellish their reports. I read the links you provided IB and the reporter was way out of line. Thank you for sharing this with us.

This generation of journalistic hypertensionists were raised to never research anything to make sure that what they are writing is really true and accurate, instead it’s all about opinion pieces and racing to see who can be the first to report on something no matter how poorly written the piece may be.
It’s so disappointing that in that race to get your story out first, people lose a lot of integrity and so do the media that publish that garbage.
For once, I’d like to see a media agency brag about being last in the ratings but always getting the story correct and factual.
ha! like that’ll ever happen.

I can’t begin to support Trump in even the slightest way. I think he almost purposefully tries to incite them to that level of lunacy with his level of….well whatever it is he thinks he’s working toward. But yeah, the left has been getting progressively more deranged for several years now. There’s simply no reality or integrity left. So they will continue to fuel the fire of the angry mob that is reacting to them and their corruption by heaping more lies and corruption on their side and he’ll possibly get elected as a result. It’s frightening. Evil and corruption on one side versus evil and corruption on the other side. Maybe both sides of the angry and deranged coin will finally give up after this next terrible election result and quit pretending to get informed enough to vote. Then the few voters who re left can walk away from the ashes of the deranged two-party fiasco and work on something better. A girl can dream.

I grew up kind on the tail-end of the era of real journalism, when there were still a few of them around, though older and sort of on the margins. I remember two of them I followed regularly. One was named Mike Royko. He once was tied up with weights and thrown into Lake Michigan while investigating mob activities in Chicago. Another was Louis Rukeyser was then a financial reporter and freelance editorialist. In his younger days, he was a war correspondent in the Arab-Israeli War and nearly killed by a suicide bomber.
Today, though we live in an Idiocracy and the media and politicians are dumbed-down correspondingly to their audiences. I watch American media and all I really see is infotainment interspersed heavily with ads from Big Pharma peddling the latest narcotics that their drug-labs have developed. That really says everything. A nation of dumbed-down drug addicts need to be told what to think, because they won’t think for themselves.

The US News and World Report also left the ‘minor detail’ that Benizir Bhutto was more or less forcibly installed by Bush Junior. Bush had a personal grudge against her predecessor, Musharaaf, and this was an early ‘regime change’ moreso than a democratic election.

Hey!
Here is a “diverse circumstance for women in the Muslim world.”!
“In some of the most socially conservative regions of Pakistan this weekend’s local government elections will be men-only affairs.
Local politicians and elders say parties contesting elections for district and village council seats in Hangu and parts of Malakand, districts of the north-western province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), have struck deals barring women from voting.”

I wonder if Calvin Woodward has ever seen the inside of a burka? ; – )

LOL! Yes, try as I might, I’m just not seeing this joyful celebration of women’s rights in the ME. I’m actually kind of amazed that anyone in the media would try to imply that.

Thanks for saying what most of us know. This is my opinion-as far as I know I’m still allowed to have one. Obama may decree that opinions are politically incorrect, issue an executive order, and send a drone after me like he wanted to before Senator Paul filibustered that possibility. The media wished for Trump because they believed he’d be easy to beat. What we’re seeing is be careful what you wish for. The majority of today’s TV, Cable, and Written news sources are parallels to Pravada in the USSR. I’m a Trump supporter by default. He was behind Carson, Huckabee, and Fiorina in order. The media destroyed my man, Carson, by attacks and doing what Bill O’Reilly did, proclaiming he didn’t have a chance and used the propaganda technique “log rolling” to create the feeling the man was inconsequential in the race. This the way the filth that calls itself “today’s journalism” functions. Maybe we should face the reality we are no longer the United States of America. We are the DIVIDED States of America. Never fear … as we import votes to tilt the electorate in favor of a one party system, we’ll soon all become numbered clones and have firearms, the means to defend ourselves against a tyrannical government, removed. Then we’ll all be led by Hillary that paragon of honesty, ethics, and great judgement. In her words “What difference does it make?” Well, it makes a lot to me.

The sad thing is, the media doesn’t have to give innuendo or half truths when it comes to the things Mr. Trump says. His rhetoric speaks for itself. But the media built him up so that they could tear him down once he became the presumptive Republican candidate.
Media bias has destroyed journalism.

The term unbiased journalism has always been an oxymoron but no more so than today. I heard it said recently, I forget by who, that progressives (most journalists fall under this category) are going to have to face very soon whose side exactly they are on; women and gays who they claim to champion or the extreme Islamic radicals who wish to enslave and destroy them. That there is even a question mark about this speaks volumes.

I hate when people tell me that journalism is dying, but then I read and listen to the current news…and cry a little. What happened to unbiased media? It seems like everyone exaggerates EVERYTHING. So, maybe I would be glad that journalism is dying…except that is going to be my major…

LOL! Journalism is dying, but it’s going to be your major? Oh dear. 🙂
I once wanted to be a journalist and we need more good ones out there, so I wish you well. Maybe you’ll be the one to resurrect unbiased media?

It is a little scary, though, going into journalism. But, thank you. haha 🙂
