I don’t want to be an organ donor. Just saying. Call me self absorbed here, but that was the first thing that popped into my head, where are all these uteruses, (uteri?) going to come from?
I speak of this article here which suggests, “Doctors Could Be 5 Years Away From Uterine Transplants for Men.” We’ve been working on this since I was a kid, so it’s nothing new, we are just now entering the realm of having our science fiction become reality.
Uterine transplants for women are already well on the way, as this article which calls for volunteers for clinical trials suggests. Yahoo news in their article called, “Surgery Could Give Men Wombs of Their Own Within 5 Years” quotes Dr. Karine Chung who says, “My guess is five, 10 years away, maybe sooner,” and also Dr. Christine McGinn who states, “I’d bet just about every transgender person who is female will want to do it..”
But is it wise?? Have we considered the ethical implications? Anybody remember when we cloned a sheep, Dolly? What no one ever talked about was Dolly’s 300 previous sisters, experiments that didn’t quite work out. A sheep is one thing, human beings area whole other ball of wax.
In a larger context too, there is biology and culture at play. Like it or not, one reason why women have worth and value and are somewhat protected within most cultures, revolves around our ability to produce children. What happens to our place in the equation when men can have babies, or perhaps we even manage to create artificial wombs?
Anybody ever read Margaret Atwood’s the Handmaid’s Tale? Coincidentally, her latest, the first of her MaddAddam trilogy, is being made into an HBO series.
Also, not to put too fine of a point on it, but where are all these uteri going to come from?
Um… that’s all awkward. But just focusing on being an organ donor in general (not specific to my uterus), I actually am an organ donor and have prayed over my organs… that, if they extend the lives of various people, that God would use that extra time in those people’s lives to draw them to Himself. ❤

That sounds really lovely. I’m just opposed to being forced to donate my organs while I’m still using them.

My uterus is retired and I want to keep it that way.

Why in the name of Sam Hill would I, a man, want a uterus?

Ha! Amen. Some of us rather like the way men were designed originally and would prefer no “new and improved” versions be made. The fact that we are taking that path and practically no objections are being launched, scares the crap out of me.

Okay, beyond the whole organ donor thing on the subject of the article titled: “doctors could be 5 years away from uterine transplants for men” uhh…
MEN DON’T HAVE BABIES!!!
What in the name of everything pathetic is wrong with this world?
Oh…and I am an organ donor, but I don’t think anyone would ever want my organs because I haven’t taken very good care of them. 😀

I don’t know! I’m thinking we need some kind of social justice campaign against patheticism.

They want to put a uterus in men so they can have babies? Seriously?
According to the world population clock, there are currently over 7.3 billion people now living on this planet. 7,384,418,034 when I looked a few minutes ago, and growing by the second. You can see for yourself: http://m.worldometers.info/world-population/
To get an idea of how many people 7.3 billion plus is, if you could say the name of each person now living at the rate of 1 name per second, non-stop, around the clock, 24 hours per day, 7 days per week, 365.25 days per year, to account for Leap Year — at that rate of saying 60 names per minute, 3,600 names per hour, 86,400 names per every 24 hours, it would take you almost 234 years to say the name of every person currently alive.
Women and their uteruses have done a more than adequate job of populating the earth. Men: move along, the position has been filled.

well heck that is taking Gender Equality to a Whole New Level !! I guess the mindset among scientists must be along the lines of … well if women can do absolutely anything and everything a man can do ( and for the most part they can) … then why shouldn’t men be able to do absolutely anything and everything women can do …. I am really curious as to how a man with that uterus would get pregnant … and the big question which should be asked… based on scientific fact… men and women’s bodies are 2 entirely different things… women by design are able to get pregnant, carry the baby , and of course give birth…. I am sorry but no amount of fiddling with nature will enable a man to do the exact same thing !… aside from how the sam h3ll is he going to get pregnant …. which organs is he willing to lose in order to make space for the baby? a Man’s bladder for starters is much larger than a woman’s … and the big question…. how the h3ll is the baby supposed to exit said womb? … most men would pray for death at the first contraction …. I would assume it would always be cesarian? … because aside from men lacking any orifice that is capable of passing something the size of a 8 to 12 pound watermelon through it… women’s pelvic bones actually separate ( widen) during birth … a man’s pelvic bone is not able to do that …. this is basic biology 101 here …. and the big question …. WHY?? just WHY?? transgendered or not … WHY? … couldn’t that research money be going to something more useful ?? I dunno… oh let’s say Cancer cures? or other disease cures? … the whole idea is insane and useless.

I think it could be very VERY good for people who have trouble conceiving and or waited too late. I think of those people the most.

It is still a matter of ethics; just because you CAN do something doesn’t mean you SHOULD do it. But our amoral society doesn’t give a (omitted) about ethics. Knowledge without wisdom has deadly consequences.

From my veteran friend… A Bigger Blessing
A grandmother was headed out the door to go to church one Sunday when she got a call from her daughter. “Would Grandma like to have her three little grandchildren visit while her daughter and son-in-law take a five-day holiday trip?”
Grandma was so delighted she put five dollars in the collection basket at church and thanked the Lord.
The Sunday after the grandchildren had returned home, she put twenty dollars in the collection.

Tying into the obvious biological problems stated above, there’s brain structure, and emotional capability (which, coincidentally, happens to tie into biology).
Women’s minds and bodies are designed to handle the influx of chemicals that come about with pregnancy, the chemicals that, among other things ( 😉 ), bonds the mother with the child, the child to the mother, and the mother to the father.
Men do not produce those chemicals in the amounts needed to form that same connection (or do many other women-only things). Even if above stated biology problems were somehow made to work, the emotional connection between the child and the fa-ma would likely be non-existent, or even hateful (because men tend to get angry when they’re in pain).
So, a guy would basically have to be re-made into a woman for this to work. In which case, doesn’t that negate the whole “love yourself for who you are” craze? XP
I’m really glad this was in the article. It was at the end, but at least it was in it.
‘ “Are people going to want to do it? Yes,” says Dr. Arthur Caplan, head of medical ethics at the NYU School of Medicine. “But I don’t see making this a priority. In terms of making the best use of scarce resources, this won’t get over the threshold.” ’

You make a really good point. What about the emotional, spiritual implications? We don’t even begin to understand how important that chemical soup that hits you when you’re pregnant actually is.

Although I am an organ donor. I can see why some organs are felt a little different about. 😃
