This actually steamed me up so much I backed out of any “shirtstorm” discussions, least I loose my cool and say something I’d regret. There’s just something about watching a grown man so bullied by women he’s apologizing and choking back tears, that really pushes my buttons. Maybe it’s the mom in me, who knows, but I can hardly stand it. It’s heart breaking and infuriating and I dislike it.
For those who don’t know, Matt Taylor is the guy who wore the wrong shirt on TV, a shirt with sexy cartoon women on it, who was just slammed in multiple twitter and facebook wars for his alleged misogyny and sexism and general epic failure as a human being. He’s also the British scientist involved in the Rosetta Project to land a spacecraft on a comet.
It’s the biggest day of his life, a huge accomplishment, and rather then getting to enjoy his moment in the sun, he gets accused of oppressing women…with his shirt. Women who ironically are also busy out objectifying themselves like mad this week. Apparently exposing your own rear end for the cameras is female empowerment, but a man wearing a shirt with cartoon women in suggestive poses is demeaning to all women everywhere. How does that even work?
It’s not women objectifying themselves that concerns me at the moment, but the cruelty and viciousness behind some of these attacks. You just made a guy who landed on a comet feel like an epic failure as a human being.
Matt Taylor, your shirt was cute and I’m so sorry you had to meet the Social Justice Warriors. They’re an ugly bunch.
For those who ever wonder why I don’t get all warm and fuzzy about the idea of living in a matriarchy, this is why. Women can sometimes have a careless kind of cruelty about them that really has no boundaries, no limitations, and no remorse.

I agree with you, IB. Hey, this is maybe the second time this week, huh? Anyway, I would guess that the guy wasn’t really paying much attention to the shirt he put on that morning. And so what? It’s just a shirt. He’s a nerdy rocket scientist, for crying out loud. It’s much ado about nothing, which is pretty much what all of Twitter is. That’s what I hate about Twitter and social media in general. The guy may not have the best taste in casual wear and he may not have used the best judgment to appear before cameras in that shirt, knowing how over-the-top the political correctness movement has become. But, seriously, people should put his choice of shirts in context of the amazing feat that he and his fellow scientists just accomplished.

I dislike twitter, too. Something else that’s rather maddening, there are at least 3 women involved in the Rosetta Project, so in the process of freaking out over a shirt that allegedly oppresses women, the social justice crowd pretty much just erased those three women scientists from the public consciousness. Then the infamous shirt was made for him by another female friend, so now she’s a target too.

I agree with both of you – the whole thing is a tempest in a tea pot. Taylor may have been thinking less than politically correctly when he put on a shirt taht would be used to judge him on his most visible day in his life – but that is hardly worthy of character assissination. Way overkill. It’s those evil women – sigh.

@eric: since no one else does, I am calling you out for hypocrisy because by your using repulsive sluts and telling me that when they act civilized you will be civilized and no one called you out on that but me…and the shirt would by obvious definition depict “slut images”…you should be calling him out for wearing it and thus not being civilized…however I totally disagree with the entire calling him out on the shirt as ridiculous. You, however, are being hypocritical. As expected.

Oh, so wearing a shirt depicting “slutty women” is ok and civilized in your eyes for a man to do. But not for women to wear. Just clarifying.
It should be no one’s business who sleeps w whom. Unless you are there. As long as all are consenting adults. Even Oprah, who I don’t care for deserves sex, I hope she gets some somewhere. Your sex preference still gives you no right to speak of others this way and be hypocritical.

LOL, That’s a good point. Apparently the scantily clad and heavily armed women of the Shirt World have no body image issues and are more than capable of defending themselves. That is a bit more appealing then being a woman so powerless and insecure you can apparently be persecuted and oppressed by a…shirt.

IB I had not seen this, but this is the sort of stupid, idiotic stuff that drives me completely insane about this new cultural ideology about political correctness. This man can wear what he likes. Fandoms, cosplay are all the rage which is what his shirt is. There is nothing wrong with it. He just made a major scientific achievement. I so tire of judgmental idiots..especially when they want to play the “he is demeaning women” card. So agree with this post. Also, why I hate Twitter. It is so absurd on there I only go on there to laugh, or cry, it depends. -CC
